1st Place winner (Maggi Chambers), District IV - Richmond Senior HS, Rockingham, NC

1st Place winner (Maggi Chambers, District IV – Richmond Senior HS, Rockingham, NC brought it home. If you could have heard this young lady, you missed it. She will represent the State of NC at the Nationals in Indianapolis, IN 22-23 April 2017

2nd place winner (Thomas G. Turner,  - Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy, Moors boro, NC); 3rd place winner (Samantha DaCruz,  - Cumberland Polytechnic High School, Fayetteville, NC)

2nd place winner (Thomas G. Turner, rep District 5 – Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy, Moors boro, NC); 3rd place winner (Samantha DaCruz, rep District 8 – Cumberland Polytechnic High School, Fayetteville, NC) , I attended event and the competition was stringent – All of these young people should do well in life. They were all good.

Feb 2017 Oratorical Contest – NC Division II Contest – Hampstead Annex, NC

The Feb 11, 2017 Oratorical Scholarship Program (A Constitutional Speech Contest) was held in Hampstead, NC – Pender County Annex. We got up early to make it for the contest scheduled at 11am.

There was 3 candidates who presented their gift of oration to the body present. American Legion Posts 181, Post 202, and Post 543 had a candidate represent.

I would like to congratulate each of our young students who each were prepared and their preparation was evident. Their knowledge of their chosen subject and the constitution was impressive. The experience I’m sure will be a memorable one for each of the contestants.

Our American Legion Post 202’s candidate (Samantha Da Cruz) of Cumberland Polytechnic High School came out victorious by placing 1st at the Division II Contest and will move on to the State competition to be held in Kings Mountain, NC.

American Legion Post 202 Oratorical 2017 High School contest

What is it: A Constitutional Speech Contest – to involve high school students, grades 9th thru 12th, on The Constitution of The United States. This educational opportunity will allowed the student to compete for scholarship awards.

Post 202 introduced this scholarship program opportunity to Westover HS; Terry Sanford HS; Cape Fear HS; Jack Britt HS; Pine Forest HS; Seventy-First HS; Douglas Byrd HS; E.E. Smith HS, and Cumberland Polytechnic HS

Post 202’s candidate that will represent the 2016-17 competition came out of Cumberland Polytechnic HS (Samantha Da Cruz -Senior).

Second Place: Solomon Brown – Mississippi
Third Place: Cheyenne Mathews – Alaska

The American Legion Oratorical Contest celebrates its 79th year.

The work put into their oration preparation will be very fruitful to the winners. While the candidate wins each level competition their cash prize increases and credited to them.
